SAUVIGNON BLANC Marlborough 2009

“The Awatere Vineyards”

The fruit for this wine comes from three vineyards located in the Lower Dashwood area (or seaward end) of the Awatere Valley.  Arguably the most exciting area for vineyard development in Marlborough.

2009 was an excellent year for our Sauvignon Blanc.  Huge, pungent nose of gooseberries, lime zest, passionfruit and fresh herbs.  The palate is explosive with excellent weight and texture, masses of fruit and herb flavours and crisp acidity.

Try this with fresh, grilled salmon, asparagus out of the garden and salad greens laced with a herbaceous extra virgin olive oil.  Grant’s favourite food match is fresh Bluff oysters in the half shell, add a splash of Sauvy, three drops of herbaceous extra virgin olive oil and sprinkle with with Maldon salt.  Chase with a slurp of Kaituna Sauvignon Blanc – heaven.

Technical Notes:

2009 Sauvignon Blanc was sourced from our three vineyards in the Awatere Valley, Marlborough.  The grapes were harvested from 12 to 22 April 2009 on cool mornings and dejuiced without delay.  Fruit maturity ranged from 22.2 to 23.4 Brix.   Cold settled juice was inoculated with a range of cultured yeasts and fermented at cool temperatures in stainless steel tanks to retain vibrant fruit characters.  The wine was aged on yeast lees until blending and bottled on 14 September 2009.
